Travelling from Thiruvananthapuram through Nedumangadu, Chullimanoor, and Kallar, we reached the foothills of Ponmudi. The climb to the peak involves negotiating somewhat narrow roads and all of 22 hairpin bends. Look around and you can glimpse Shola (in Tamil, cholai) forests - actually thickets of dense vegetation that thrive in folds of the hills that are rich in soil deposits, humus and moisture.
Once you park at the top, don't expect drinks and snacks. Instead, get plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and if you are lucky, you can even inhale cool misty clouds and enjoy the pitter-patter of rain.
There is a Guest house and Amenity centre soon to come up at the peak.
